A priest forever after the order of Melchizedek? Yet tithing in not prescribed for believers in the New Testament. I think because the Jewish, temple system and law was still in use. No need for a money competition on tithing! Instead I hear Jesus teaching, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” Thankfully, He addresses the heart issue.. Although tithing has been a starting point for us, and Jesus is worthy of receiving tithes and so much more, I believe that we were able to tithe by grace and receive the promises along with it. Retired now, we no longer have income, regular increase, as a starting point for giving, we need a new grace. Maybe as you say, there is no longer a grace for tithing as we believed.
What I have seen in people is a great enthusiasm for orphans, for outreach, but less of a willingness to the local church ministry, paying the pastor, and the light bill. I do hope we can be led by the Spirit, It seemed to me that tithing where we receive Jesus’ ministry, the bread and the wine, is like doing what is first, going the first mile, then we have abundance for so much more, going the second mile.
