Hope in a Sea of Panic
The more we see the “signs” of the times, the more potential there is to fear what is ahead, especially when it comes to money. I know many people are asking, “Will the economy stabilize after the effects of a worldwide pandemic?” Others are looking toward the future with dread at the notion that Christians, one day, won’t be allowed to buy and sell. However, God’s Word gives us extraordinary hope in the midst of our anxieties and questions.
“You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’ Regarding everything that this people call a conspiracy, and you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it” (Isa. 8:12, NASB). God is always reminding His people not to be afraid.
The reason we do not have to fear how the economy shifts is because God has a different economy operating within His kingdom.
Isaiah is not telling us that there are no conspiracies; he’s simply saying to not worry about them. Don’t be afraid of them; trust in God instead.
We Needed $2,000… and Fast
I remember needing to make a $2,000 payment in less than two weeks a few years back. To my wife and I, it felt like an impossible amount of money to come up with in a short amount of time. Yet even in our worries, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the Word and so we prayed in faith that we would receive $2,000 in less than two weeks.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:31-33 (NASB), “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.”
I prayed, “God, we’re not perfect and I know we need Your grace, but we’ve been seeking Your kingdom the best we know how. We’re trusting in Your grace. We need You to provide.”
We prayed each day for one week. Then it happened. I had one freelance job that month that would cover our regular bills. When I completed the job and submitted it to the client, they told me to invoice them and to add an extra $2,000 to the price of the project. They wanted me to charge them $2,000 more than we originally agreed upon! They couldn’t have possibly known what we were praying for, since we hadn’t told anyone. It was the exact amount we prayed for and we had it one week after we started praying.
He Owns the Cattle on a Thousand Hills
Here’s my point: I only had the ability to make a certain amount of money that month but God was not limited to the economy I was working in. He was calling me up to a better economy, one that operates by faith.
I’m not talking about wishing money into existence either. That’s a common phrase even among non-believers today, “Manifest your money,” but I’m challenging you to shift from an earthly perspective on money to a heavenly one. I cannot tell you exactly what the future economy will look like but I can tell you where you can find stability. Trade worry and fear over the unknown for a confident trust in the One who holds the future in His hands.
